Life, Structure and Cognition 2024 – A multitude of times
Dans le cadre du meeting “Life Structure and Cognition 2024 : A multitude of times, Lera Boroditsky (University of California, San Diego), professeur de sciences cognitives va présenter une conférence « How languages and cultures construct time » le 19 juin 2024 à 18h à l’amphithéâtre Buffon.
“How do we think about time? On the one hand, time is abstract: we cannot smell time, we cannot taste time, we cannot see it or touch it with our hands. On the other hand, time forms the very fabric of our experience; we can’t experience anything outside of time. So how do we construct our understanding of this fundamental domain? And how do we even go beyond and invent fanciful notions like time-travel? I will show how languages and cultures allow us to build complex representations of time that go way beyond what we can experience. Because languages differ, humans around the world think about time in remarkably different ways, with culturally-based notions of time deeply embedded in the organization of our brains.”

L’édition 2024 de la réunion du LSC, « A Multitude of Times », se concentrera sur le temps et ses déclinaisons au sein des systèmes sociaux, biologiques et physiques. L’objectif de ce colloque est de rassembler des scientifiques du comité LSC, des experts invités et des scientifiques de l’IHES pour présenter les derniers progrès réalisés dans la compréhension du temps en tant que concept à multiples facettes et ses nombreuses implications sur différents aspects de la vie. L’idée est d’alimenter les discussions, le brainstorming et d’explorer des voies alternatives pour comprendre comment la multitude de façons dont nous pouvons concevoir le temps contribue ensemble à la richesse de la biologie et des processus cognitifs.
