Institut Jacques Monod seminar – Gilles Degremont

6 November 2026 - 11 h 45 min - 13 h 00 min

Invited by the Institut Jacques Monod et Epigenetic and Cell Fate Centre, Gilles Degremont (Pôle Universitaire d’Innovation Valocité Université Paris Cité) will present an Institut Jacques Monod seminar on the theme:

Intellectual Property and patent issues in the field of health and life science

Abstract:

Gilles is an Intellectual Property (IP) specialist and a mechanical engineer (INSA Lyon). He began his professional career in 1996 within an Intellectual Property law firm, before joining the oilfield services industry in 2001, when he moved to Coflexip, subsequently renamed Technip. Technip was a major French engineering and technology company listed on the CAC 40 prior to its acquisition by FMC Technologies in 2016.

Over the course of approximately twenty years within the Group, Gilles headed the Intellectual Property Department, overseeing the management and development of the company’s IP activities in an international industrial environment.

Following a three-year professional experience outside the field of Intellectual Property, he joined Université Paris Cité in 2024 as part of the establishment of the Valocité University Innovation Hub (Pôle Universitaire d’Innovation – PUI). In this capacity, he serves as an IP Engineer, with responsibility for Intellectual Property matters relating to the Hub, including supporting the development, protection and valorization of research outputs and innovative technologies.

The presentation will provide an overview of the different IP assets that can be leveraged as part of an IP strategy, as well as the potential avenues for exploiting and generating value from each of them.

After a brief review of the fundamentals of intellectual property, the mechanisms and support provided by the university will be presented, along with practical information and best practices to adopt when it comes to IP protection, in order to avoid jeopardizing potential opportunities for commercialization or valorization.

We will also discuss the various IP-related issues you may encounter during your career as a PhD student or researcher, as well as the different ways of addressing them.

Finally, a specific focus on the patentability of medical devices and pharmaceuticals, as well as on the patentability of living organisms and, in particular, the differences between the US and European approaches, will conclude this session. There will also be time dedicated to questions and discussion at the end.
