Scientific Clubs
To promote the creative exchange of ideas, several of our colleagues at the Institut Jacques Monod have decided to meet together on a regular basis to discuss results, methods and perspectives in their respective fields of research. The trans-program nature of the clubs, and the presence of people with different scientific backgrounds and goals make them excellent occasions for scientific exchange.
Currently there are 5 such clubs: Bioinfo, Cell Biology, Evolution Journal Club, WormFly and Young Scientists.
Participation in these scientific "clubs" is open to all members of the Institut Jacques Monod and in some cases open to colleagues from other institutes as well.
If you are interested in participating in the club of your interest, please contact the person in charge (see below).
Club BioInfo
The club BioInfo brings together scientists from the Institut Jacques Monod who wants to develop their bioinformatics skills.
We are learning how to reformat data using regular expressions, how to combine and automate analyses, and how to manipulate databases. We use the linux command line and python programming.
We meet once a week and follow the chapters from the book "Practical computings for biologists".

Cell Biology Club
In September 2011, we launched the Cell Biology Club, open to everyone, which is held every two weeks, on Wednesdays at 12h30. The goal of this club is to provide an opportunity for informal exchange on any theme in cell biology.
One person presents either their own results, a paper ("Journal club style"), or a a novel technique or conceptual advance. Each presentation should be between 30 and 45 minutes long, with questions welcome throughout the presentation, to maintain the informal style and encourage interaction. The presentation and questions are in English.
Right after the presentation, and to encourage exchange and discussion, we will get together for lunch, with drinks and desserts provided.

Evolution Journal Club
The Evolution Journal Club, founded by the Grange/Geigl, Orgogozo and Balavoine/Vervoort teams, aims at sharing and discussing recent evolution based literature. Articles deal with all aspects and all levels of evolution (may it be ecological, developmental, paleontological, genomic, molecular, phylogenetic, behavioural, epistemological, sociological, linguistic or culinary).
The articles are presented in English during a 30-to-45-minute talk. Meetings are taking place once a month, on every first Thursdays, at 2.00 pm.

WormFly
The WormFly is a weekly meeting of the groups at the Institut Jacques Monod using as model organism Drosophilas or nematodes, plus one team from the unit of Functional and Adaptive Biology.
Given the common theme is the model organism, the topics covered vary from Evolution to Biochemistry, from Developmental Biology to Physiology.
Every week a member of one of the groups presents a seminar on his or her own work; on occasion the WormFly is presented by a guest speaker, from outside the IJM. Presentations are very informal in style (the audience is encouraged to ask questions during the seminar rather than at the end) and lasts about one hour.
The WormFly takes place every Thursday at noon, and is presented in English.

Young Scientists Club
The Young Scientists Club of the institut Jacques Monod brings together the undergraduated students, PhD students, and post-doctoral fellows. It is the opportunity for all to meet regularly and to evoke scientific results, current questions and problems encountered. We privilege informal presentations, in which everyone is free to speak, in order to facilitate exchanges, and to bring together our scientific and critical minds. This club also allows the participants to acquire formal training in view of important talks (meetings, requests for fellowships, etc.). Participants are invited to speak in English which makes this club accessible to all the young scientists of the institut, including non French-speaking scientists.
The Young Scientists Club of the institut Jacques Monod meets once every 2 weeks, on Wednesdays at 12:30.
